The comedy does not begin because a bear behaves absurdly. It begins because everyone around him assigns the wrong meaning to behavior he has been trained to perform correctly.

01 / Competing scripts
Two systems.
One terrible reading.
The Bear is a veteran working animal actor. He understands marks, routes, cues and conditioned physical actions. The airport understands restricted zones, unattended baggage, escalation and threat containment.
Both systems are rational from inside themselves. The pressure comes from forcing them to interpret the same evidence at the same time.

02 / The human problem
Howard can read him.
Nobody reads Howard.
Howard is not trying to tame a wild animal. He is trying to explain a professional one. Every second he spends translating the Bear’s conditioned route makes him look less credible to people whose procedures have already produced a more frightening conclusion.
That turns knowledge into social liability. The person closest to the truth becomes the easiest person to dismiss.

03 / The pink suitcase
A comic object
with real gravity.
The pink suitcase cannot function as a random gag. It gives the Bear’s movement purpose, gives the airport visible evidence and gives Howard a mystery he must solve before the security response reaches its logical end.
The brighter and more ordinary the object appears, the worse the institutional imagination becomes around it.

The tonal contract
The situation is absurd.
The danger is not.
The film stays straight-faced. The Bear remains physically believable. Airport personnel behave according to recognizable incentives rather than comic stupidity. The laughter comes from mounting evidence that looks decisive and means the opposite.
